Betfred Wheelchair Challenge Cup Preview | Quarter-Finals

The Quarter-Finals of the Betfred Wheelchair Challenge Cup get underway this weekend as the remaining 8 sides fight for a place in the Semi-Finals on 9/10 May.

Kicking off the weekend are 2025 runners up London Roosters who host Sheffield Eagles (KO 12:45pm).

Both sides have made a strong side to the cup, putting huge points on the board against their Round One opponent to make it to the Quarter-Finals with ease.

Following them are Bradford Bulls and Wigan Warriors, who meet for the first of many games in 2026, as the Bulls join the Betfred Wheelchair Super League this season:

“It’s their first season, but we’re not going to underestimate them,” said Wigan’s Jack Heggie ahead of their meet.

“We know they’re going to be strong, we know where their threats are.

“Bradford did a really good job against Castleford who were the strongest team in the Championship from what I saw last year, having won the Grand Final. Bradford overcame them in the Challenge Cup this time round so they’ve obviously progressed since last year.”

The England International has had a huge start to his 2026 season, putting a massive 70 points on the scoreboard for Wigan across just two games. This year, he’s hoping he can take his club all the way to the Grand Final:

“We made the playoffs last year, we didn’t get to where we wanted to be, we wanted to be in the end game to win it.

“This year we want a good cup run, we want to be in the playoffs again and competing for both trophies, that’s our ambition.”

But he’s not fighting for that Final spot alone as he notes some of his teammates to keep an eye out for this season:

“Toby (Burton-Carter) is an Irish International who has really started to make his mark, certainly in training over the last 12 months but now that’s started to transfer onto the court - I think he’s become an integral part of our team.

“Nathan (Roberts) has always been a good player and I think this year, with a few tweaks to his game that he’s been working on I think he’ll be strong as well.

“Unfortunately, one of our newer signings Matt (Turner) is actually cup-tied for this game, but I’m very much interested to see how gets on this year.”

Also meeting on Saturday are Edinburgh Giants and Leeds Rhinos in a rematch of last weekend’s fixture in Round One of the Betfred Wheelchair Super League (KO 1:30pm).

The Giants will be looking to get some more points on the board after the Rhinos dominated that game, with Leeds making the journey to Edinburgh for the second week in a row.

The final game of the Quarter Finals sees holders Halifax Panthers host Hull FC (KO 3pm).

Both teams made light work of Round One, each putting over 60 points between them and their opponent.

It’s all to play for as the Panthers fight to prove they’re still the team to beat, whilst the Black and Whites look to show they’re not to be dismissed as they aim to improve on their 2025 form and make it past the Quarter-Finals.
